QUICK REVIEW: Amazing smooth formula and a gorgeous dark-red colour, long lasting (wears down to a smooth berry stain) and highly pigmented. A little too easy to stain, so be careful applying on the edges (or use a concealer to clean up). Ridiculously versatile and good value for money.

Full Review:

 This is the first lipstick I had ever bought in my adult life - it was inspired by a Facebook photo of a girl I knew and she was wearing the most gorgeous dark red/brown matte lipstick in autumn. Since then, I've hunted for a dark lip (a bit ambitious in hindsight considering I had never really worn lipstick), and I found this little tube for £2.99 at Boots.

It's housed in a simple black plastic tube with a tapered top, decorated by the Collection symbol and a sticker underneath noting the shade. There's some gilt detailing, but its simple and now that I've had it for over a year, a little worn down. The cap clicks in securely, so this is great to just pop in your pocket and forget.

The colour is of a dark berry red that leans sliiightly bluish in undertones. It's a gorgeous colour that is highly pigmented.

The formula is gorgeous - so creamy and smooth, and doesn't apply patchily (which is a concern for darker lipsticks). When applied there's a sheen to it, which is a little more wearable than mattes. The formula does stain, and very quickly so you need to be careful when applying at the edges and quick to correct mistakes. However, once it's applied, it dries down and lasts, fading away evenly to its berry stain. It won't stand up to hard pressing or oily foods, just the casual drink or two.

Clockwise from left: Bare lips, lipstain, and straight out the tube.

The best thing about this is that I can wear it 3 ways on my lips;

  • As a lipstain, by using my ring finger to pick up product from the bullet and dab on to my lips (clean up with a lip brush on the edges then smudge that with your finger for better application). The colour is more of a berry shade.
  • As a matte lip colour, by applying straight from the bullet and blotting lightly. Colour will lean more towards red/berry. Dries down and the colour does not transfer if you're careful.
  • As an opaque, full on bold dark red lip with a sheen finish. Applied straight from the bullet and left to dry down.

Verdict: This is a great lipstick for people who are unsure but want to try out a vampy colour without breaking the bank, it applies evenly and is formulated to suit a broad range of complexions. I don't regret purchasing this one bit and will be sad when I finish it.
